Scouting a Location Before the Shoot

A location scout is really a light and background scout, the ‘pretty’ part is almost beside the point until those two things check out.

Visit at the actual time of day you’ll be shooting, not whenever’s convenient. Light changes completely between 10am and golden hour, and a location that looks flat at noon can turn spectacular two hours before sunset.

Walk the space looking for backgrounds that won’t compete with the subject: clean walls, open sky, foliage with separation, anything without harsh clutter or distracting signage in frame.

Check for shade options as a backup, open shade under an awning or trees gives soft, even light on a bright day when direct sun would blow out highlights or force harsh squinting.

Finally, think about backup spots within a two-minute walk. Weather, crowds, and permits change fast, and having a plan B saves a session instead of scrambling mid-shoot.
